Krok za Krokiem
In English - Step by Step, an association for the care of disabled children, that needed to create accomodation for disabled Ukrainian refugees and their carers. The Club worked closely with RC Zamosc to contribute to specific needs, donating 1400€ for a mobile transport/bath trolley, which was bought locally in Poland.
Even in times of peace, disabled children are often marginalised and forgotten, hidden away in institutions. The war in Ukraine has affected them and their carers especially badly. Poland has taken over 3.5 million refugees (*according to the UN) and is struggling to cope.
Fortunately the historical city of Zamość in Poland, which has close links with Lwow (a.k.a. Lviv) , is also home to organisations which help disabled children. Specifically ‘Krok za Krokiem’ (Step by Step), has taken disabled children from Ukraine, but found a shortage of suitable accommodation.
International Rotary co-operation saves forgotten refugee children
Rotary came to the rescue, with local clubs spearheading a development to convert containers into adapted living units for the children and their carers, in a peaceful setting. Funding was obtained from a range of organisations in the USA, Taiwan and Germany, including other Rotary clubs. The development was officially opened on June 22.
There are 8 two-bedroom housing units, each with a shared bathroom, housing 32 people. Eventually the site will be home to 50 refugees, disabled children and their carers. There is a beautiful garden and even an outdoor stage to help build community spirit.
The Club, which supports a similar local charity, Aspandem, has contributed a special trolley which can be used both for transporting and bathing children. The connection with RC Zamość means we can be effective in answering specific needs quickly and directly. This is Rotary at its best.
